News

here follows a report of the recent (8th June) Racketball Finals night held at Hertford Squash & Racketball Club, Hoe Lane, Ware.

The 2006/07 Senior season came to a close recently with the Racketball Finals at the Hoe Lane base of Hertford Squash & Racketball Club.
The Plate Final was contested by Steve Ward and Steve Lewis. Recent league form had the odds slightly in favour of Lewis. However, Ward, playing in his first Club Final had other ideas. A relentless onslaught of powerfull shots took him to a 3-1 match win.
The Championship Final was between current Club Champion Mark Coffey and first time finalist Nigel Strongitharm. Coffey continued his dominance of the Hertford courts as he won 3-0 although the watching gallery felt sure the ever improving Strongitharm will be back to contest many more finals!

'Following on from the Senior Finals, Hertford staged their first Club Junior Racketball Championship which now complements the junior handicap competition held in Dec.
A keenly contested competition, supported by parents and club members, finished with the Plate and Championship Finals. The Plate Final was between Luke Savidge and Liam Evans. The watching gallery were treated to an entertaining match that saw Savidge take a closely fought first game 17-14 for the match to be levelled 1-1 as Evans won the second game 15-8. The deciding game saw some determined pressure play from Savidge as he won the game 15-6 to take the match 2-1.
The Championship Final was between lasts years handicap finalists Ben Fuller and Jonathon Ilett. Both players continued the entertainment as they played a match of varied shots and great ability. Earlier competition form had Fuller looking the likely winner as he had been very consistent and focused throughout. However, Ilett had been improving with each match and indeed played exceptionally in the final well to beat a strong opponent 15-12, 15-7 to take the title 2-0! A worthy finale to an excellent competition.

Hertford Squash & Racketball Club recently brought their Squash season to a close with an entertaining Championship Finals evening at its Hoe Lane Ware base.

An air of expectation surrounded the Championship Final as defending Champion Mark Coffey was up against Richard Roomans who had reached the final in his first season at the club.
Nerves clearly got the better of Roomans in the first game as Coffey took full advantage to win 9-0. That game aside, Roomans started to play some stylish squash and settled in to a much more competitive match with his experienced opponent. However, Coffey's consistently good width and length of shots took him to a match winning score of 9-0, 9-4 and 9-5.

The Championship Plate Final was a much closer affair between Garry Pound and Ivor Davey. Daveys quality of shots matched by Pounds fitness took this good humoured match to a 2-2 scoreline leaving a fifth and deciding game that the watching gallery were unsure who might prevail. The start of the fifth saw a complete change in attitude from both players as every point was keenly contested. Both players looked to take the ball early which led to a number of lets and strokes being awarded. Davey edged the deciding game 9-7 to take the title.
